BASES Accredited Sport & Exercise Scientist
BASES Supervisor and Reviewer
The British Association of Sport and Exercise Sciences (BASES) is the UK's leading professional body for sport scientists.
In football, we have seen an increased demand for BASES accredited practitioners due to EPPP requirements, further CPD and future proofing their careers.
There is also growing interest from practitioners outside of the UK who are either seeking a move to the UK to work or seeing the accreditation as a significant addition to their CV.
After speaking to many practitioners about the direct accreditation process, there seems to be confusion around how exactly you can achieve accreditation.
Therefore, I have put together this 6 month accelerator programme to help experienced practitioners achieve their BASES accreditation.
Duration: 6 months
Start Date: January 2025
Platform: Zoom and Circle
This accelerator programme is aimed at experienced football physical performance practitioners looking to gain BASES accreditation. Each month will have a specific theme to build up your accreditation application before final submission for the June 2025 deadline.

at Malone Performance
Dr James Malone has 15 years experience within the sports performance industry. This includes time as 1st team sport scientist for Liverpool and Everton Football Clubs, European Sport Scientist for Catapult Sports and Senior Lecturer in Coaching Science.
James has been BASES accredited for the past 10 years and is also active as a BASES supervisor for the Supervised Experience route and reviewer for other candidates. He was also previously membership representative for the BASES Sport & Performance division.
"James' support and feedback was invaluable in being successful in my application at the first attempt. His detailed knowledge of the application process, and ability to provide high level examples of evidence, was vital in evidencing my work and experiences for the competency profile."
- David Flower, Everton FC
"James was instrumental in helping me achieve BASES Accreditation. From the initial discussion to compiling my portfolio, his guidance was key in helping to highlight the key competencies and experiences from my career to demonstrate the necessary standards required by BASES"
- Andrew Guard, Atlanta United FC
You will join an exclusive online community through the platform Circle. The community will contain all the tools needed to achieve accreditation. In addition, there will be a live monthly group call hosted on Zoom by Dr James Malone.
To be clear - taking part in this 6 month programme doesn't automatically guarantee accreditation. However, if you follow the programme correctly then it will give you a very high chance of becoming accredited. So far, there is a 100% success rate with the programme.
This programme is aimed at experienced football physical performance practitioners looking for the DIRECT application route. If you are an early career football practitioner or a masters student, then the BASES supervised experience pathway is your best option and separate to this programme.
The full details are found on the BASES website here, but the main criteria for direct application are:
- Have a relevant undergraduate and masters degree in sport & exercise sciences.
- Currently a BASES professional member (can sign up here if not).
- Typically would have a minimum of 5 years experience in football, ideally across different roles/clubs. If unsure, you can still submit an enquiry to clarify.
The 6 month programme cost is £500, with an initial £100 deposit to secure your place (limited to 10 places per cohort). Practitioners may seek financial help from their clubs as part of staff CPD budgets, with invoicing arranged with the club.
Gain your BASES accreditation and future proof your career as a sport scientist/physical performance practitioner in football.
